Major Arcana: all 22 cards

The Major Arcana are the 22 named cards of a tarot deck, numbered here from 1, The Magician, to 22, The Fool. In a destiny matrix they are not drawn but calculated: every number a birth date produces falls between 1 and 22, and each one is read as one of these cards. The arcana gives the theme; the position it lands in says what that theme applies to.

How many major arcana cards are there?

Twenty-two. A full tarot deck holds 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits. A destiny matrix uses the 22 only, because every number it calculates is reduced to a value between 1 and 22.

What does the word arcana mean?

Arcana is the plural of the Latin arcanum - a secret, a hidden thing. Nineteenth-century occultists borrowed the word for tarot and split the deck in two: the Major Arcana, 22 named cards that each carry a whole theme, and the Minor Arcana, the four numbered suits. The word itself promises no fortune-telling; it only means the hidden things.

What is the difference between the major and minor arcana?

The Major Arcana are 22 standalone cards with names - The Star, The Tower, Justice - and each one names a theme of a life. The Minor Arcana are 56 suit cards, closer to everyday detail. The destiny matrix works with the Major Arcana alone: it is built from numbers, and 22 is the ceiling.

What are the major arcana in order?

From 1 to 22, with the force each card carries and the theme it sets wherever it lands in a chart.

Why is The Fool numbered 22 and not 0?

In a tarot deck The Fool is card 0 and The World is card XXI. A birth date can never reduce to 0, so the destiny matrix moves The Fool to 22 and leaves every other card on its usual number: Arcana 1 is The Magician, card I; Arcana 11 is Justice, card XI; Arcana 21 is The World. That single shift is the whole difference between the two numbering systems.

Which arcana can never be the centre of your matrix?

Six of them: Arcana 1, 2, 15, 17, 19 and 21. The centre is a sum of sums - day, month and year added and reduced, then added again - and those six numbers are not results that calculation can reach. Counting every birth date from 1930 to 2026, the most frequent centres are Arcana 6, 8 and 10 - The Lovers, Strength, Wheel of Fortune - each at 11.1%; the rarest that happens at all is Arcana 16, The Tower, at 0.2%.

Frequently asked questions

Which arcana is the most common?

Arcana 5, The Hierophant - it turns up somewhere in 54.8% of charts. The rarest is Arcana 1, The Magician, at 11.5%. Low numbers win because most matrix positions are sums that reduce back down.

Can the same arcana appear twice in one matrix?

Yes, and usually it does: 80% of birth dates produce a chart where at least one of the 22 fills more than one of the nine positions. A repeated arcana is read as a theme the life keeps returning to.

Which arcana can a birth month never give?

Arcana 13 to 22. The month position is simply the birth month, and the calendar stops at 12, so the higher cards only reach a chart through the day, the year or a derived position.

Are major arcana readings the same as a destiny matrix?

No. A tarot reading draws cards at random, so it answers a question asked today. A destiny matrix calculates the same 22 arcana from a fixed birth date, so the result never changes - the same date always gives the same chart.
