Only the date of birth - day, month and year. This is the line that separates the matrix from astrology: an astrologer asks for the hour and the city because the ascendant and the houses are impossible to place without them, whereas the matrix has nowhere to put that information at all. It runs on three whole numbers and nothing else.
The reduction rule
Every value is brought into the range 1–22, and the reason is a count rather than a convention: the Major Arcana number exactly 22. A value outside that range has no arcana to attach itself to, so its digits are summed and the step repeats until it lands inside. This single operation, called reduction, is the whole of the arithmetic - everything else is addition.
For example, 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11. The year 1993 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22, and that is where it stops: the matrix reduces to 22, not to a single digit, which is the first habit to drop if you have met numerology anywhere else.

A worked example
Take 17 May 1993.
- Day: 17 is already within range, so it stays 17 (The Star).
- Month: 5 (The Hierophant).
- Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22 (The Fool).
- Karma: 17 + 5 + 22 = 44 → 4 + 4 = 8 (Strength).
- Centre: 17 + 5 + 22 + 8 = 52 → 5 + 2 = 7 (The Chariot).
Everything else on the chart - the family lines, the line of love, the money code, the karmic tail - comes from repeating that same step on neighbouring values. The names make them sound like separate techniques, and they are not: there is one technique, add two numbers and reduce, and the labels only say where on the figure it was applied.

Destiny matrix vs natal chart
The two get confused because both are called charts and both begin with a birth date. A natal chart is astronomy: the real positions of the planets in signs and houses at the moment of birth, which is why it demands an exact hour and city. The matrix is arithmetic wearing Tarot names, and it asks for neither. Because they take different inputs and answer different questions, they cannot contradict each other - one speaks about tasks and character, the other about how a person meets the world. Frequently asked questions
Can the destiny matrix be calculated without a birth time?
Yes - and not as a fallback. There is no step in the calculation that could consume an hour, so leaving it out approximates nothing and loses nothing. Birth time is a requirement of a different system, the natal chart, where the ascendant and the houses are computed directly from it.
Why are numbers reduced to 22?
Because the values are not quantities here, they are names. Each one stands for a Major Arcana, and the Major Arcana number exactly 22; a result of 31 or 44 names nothing at all, so its digits are summed until it names something.
What does arcana 13 mean in the matrix?
The thirteenth arcana carries the name it has in the Tarot deck, and that inherited name is what alarms people. Read in the matrix it means completion and renewal - the end of something that has run its course, and the step into a new stage - and never a forecast about anyone dying. In practice it points to the ability to let go and begin again.
Is the destiny matrix a science?
No. The calculation is perfectly repeatable, but that is a property of addition rather than evidence of anything: the same date will always give the same numbers. What sits on top of those numbers is a symbolic language for thinking about yourself, and it claims no ability to predict events.
Does the matrix change over time?
The numbers do not change - they depend only on the date of birth. What changes are the periods: the arcana of the year and of the day are calculated separately and refresh over time.
