Two words need pinning down before any arithmetic starts. “Positions” are the numbers already standing at the corners of the figure - Day, Month, Year, Karma and the four corners of the ancestral square - not planets, and not cards drawn at random. “Reduce” names one operation only: while a sum is above 22, add its digits, so every result stays inside the 1–22 count of the Major Arcana.
- Earth = reduce(Day + Year), Sky = reduce(Month + Karma).
- Personal = reduce(Earth + Sky).
- Social = reduce(father’s line + mother’s line) - the diagonals of the ancestral square.
- Spiritual = reduce(Personal + Social), Planetary = reduce(Social + Spiritual).

How to read the levels
- Personal - the main level of the first half of life: the sphere where abilities become a craft and life starts feeling “in place”.
- Social - switches on closer to maturity: what a person brings to others and what the circle values them for, from family to profession.
- Spiritual - the inner task: the quality life asks to grow regardless of careers and statuses.
- Planetary - the farthest horizon: the trace that remains - read as a direction, not a duty to “save the world”.
“Level” here does not mean rank: the fourth is not better than the first, and nobody graduates from one to the next. The word marks scale - how far out from the same person the answer reaches - which is why each level is computed from the sum of the ones before it.
Frequently asked questions
Can the purpose be calculated for free, without signing up?
Yes - and it is worth naming what “free” covers here. The numbers are free: a date goes in, four arcana come out, by formulas printed on this page rather than hidden behind a sign-up form. What costs money is the reading - what those arcana mean in concrete spheres and actions - because that part is written, not computed.
I got a “heavy” arcana - 13 or 15. Is that a bad purpose?
There are no bad purposes, and “heavy” is a label about effort rather than about outcome. In these positions 13 reads as the ability to lead others through endings and renewal, and 15 as work with desire and resources - both demanding themes, neither a punishment. The word to keep is “level”, not “verdict”: a purpose describes what to grow into, and growing is meant to cost something.
Are life purpose and the destiny number the same thing?
No, and the overlap is only in what goes in. A destiny number is a single digit, 1–9, produced by adding every digit of the date the way classical numerology does. Purpose in the matrix is four arcana in the 1–22 range, each derived from named positions rather than from the raw digits. Same birth date, two different methods - and neither number is a version of the other.
What if the personal purpose “does not match” the profession?
An arcana names a theme, not a job title - two different kinds of word, and only the second one appears on a contract. One theme unfolds across dozens of professions, so a “mismatch” usually means the theme is missing from the daily tasks rather than from the career. That facet can normally be added to the work already there, without leaving it.
The calculation is for entertainment and self-reflection.
The arcana is a door, not the room
“Purpose” is a large word, and Luna keeps it small enough to act on: spheres, actions, “try yourself in…” instead of a mission statement. The four levels then arrive as one story built on your matrix, rather than as four separate labels.
