The 12 astrology houses are the “where” of a birth chart: twelve areas of life in a fixed order - identity, money, communication, home, play, routine, partners, shared resources, meaning, career, community, and the inward stretch. A planet says what, its sign says how, and its house says which part of a life it happens in. Houses turn with the Earth rather than with the planets, a full circle every day, so this is the one section of a chart that genuinely needs an exact time and city of birth. The sign on the cusp sets the MANNER in which the area is lived - its “character”:

Placidus or whole sign: why your houses are not 30° each

Whole sign houses give every house exactly 30°. Placidus - what this site and most Western software use - cuts the wheel by the time it takes a degree to rise, so the houses come out uneven, and the further from the equator you were born the more uneven they get. That is the real answer to “why is my 12th house enormous”. Born in London, one house in your chart can be almost four times another; born in Quito, all twelve are within five degrees of each other. Above roughly 66° Placidus stops having a solution at all, which is why software falls back to another system for Arctic birthplaces.

None of this makes one system right and the other wrong. It does mean a planet near a cusp can genuinely change houses when you switch - so if two sites disagree about your Mars, check which house system each of them used before deciding one is broken.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a birth time required for the houses?

Houses turn with the Earth: a full circle a day, which means a shift every ~4 minutes. A half-hour error can move a planet into the next house. Planet signs can be computed without a time; houses cannot.

Which house system is used?

Placidus - the most common in Western astrology and the one the app uses. Other systems (Koch, whole sign) draw slightly different borders - that is normal, schools differ.

Does an empty house mean nothing will happen in that area?

No. There are 10 planets and 12 houses - everyone has empty ones. An empty house simply means the area does not demand constant attention; its flavor is described by the sign on the cusp, and the ruler of that sign shows where its energy comes from.

What if a planet sits right on a house border?

It is then read as working in both, leaning toward the following house. An exact birth time - from the certificate rather than memory - settles it.

Is the sixth house about illness?

Old textbooks said so, but it reads more honestly as the house of life’s rhythm: routine, everyday work, caring for oneself. Health cannot be predicted from a chart, and we do not try - real health belongs to real professionals.
