The reduction rule

“Reduce” here means one thing and nothing else: add up the digits of a number, then do it again while the result is still above 22. The ceiling is 22 because there are 22 Major Arcana - which is also where the method parts company with numerology, where reduction runs all the way down to a single digit.

Personal positions (the diagonal square)

The ancestral square

“Ancestral” is the name of a position, not a claim about anyone’s relatives: the square holds four corners, and each is the reduced sum of the two ADJACENT personal corners. No new information enters here - the same four numbers are simply paired differently.

That last sentence is the whole answer to a question this page gets asked sideways: since no new information enters, none of these corners can be a number for children or pregnancy. A formula that takes one birth date and nothing else has nowhere to put a medical fact.

The channel rule - the core of the deep sections

A “channel” is not a metaphor for flowing energy. It is a triple written channel(V, T): the vertex V you start from, the target T it is measured against, and the two numbers that fall out of them.

Which target belongs to which channel is the detail most often got wrong. Cardinal channels - the personality ones - run to the centre E; the diagonal, ancestral ones run to the month vertex B.

Arcana of time

Three arcana move with time, and none of them is a forecast in the astrological sense - no planet is consulted. Year: reduce(day + month + personal year), where the personal year turns on the birthday rather than on January 1. Month: reduce(year arcana + month number), and day: reduce(month arcana + day number). Today’s values are in the arcana calculator.

Couple compatibility

Each date gets its own matrix; matching positions are added and reduced into a shared matrix of the couple, which yields three arcana (relationship, merging, harmony). Where schools differ - an honest list

Three points in the method are genuinely contested, which is worth knowing before comparing our numbers with anyone else’s. Here is what we chose, and what changes if a source chose otherwise:

• Arcana of the year/month/day: some schools count from the calendar year, some from the personal one. We count from the personal year (from the birthday).
• Numbering of 8 and 11: Strength and Justice swap places between decks. We use the numbering where 8 is Strength and 11 is Justice.
• Targets of the diagonal channels: checked against reference calculations - ancestry runs to the month vertex B, not to the centre.

One last boundary, since it is the one most often blurred: the arithmetic is exact and reproducible, but that exactness belongs to the sums and not to the meanings hung on them. The destiny matrix is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not a science, and nothing here predicts events.
