How this is calculated
Signs sit 30° apart on the circle, so the distance between two of them is already a classical aspect - not an opinion but the arithmetic of the circle, the same in any textbook.
Aspect
- conjunction — 0°
- semisextile — 30°
- sextile — 60°
- square — 90°
- trine — 120°
- quincunx — 150°
- opposition — 180°
Elements
- one element sets a shared temperature and speed
- friendly elements feed each other - fire needs air, earth needs water
- contrasting elements need translation: what is natural to one is a foreign language to the other
Modalities
- the same one - a shared rhythm, but also a contest for one role
- different, which mostly helps: one starts, the other sustains or adapts
Those three things define how a pair has to negotiate.
Love compatibility and relationship compatibility are two questions
Love compatibility is about pull: who notices whom across a room, how fast it heats up, what the first three months feel like. It runs mostly on elements - fire and air catch quickly, earth and water settle in slowly and deeply.
Relationship compatibility is about the years after that: money, chores, whose plan wins on a Saturday, how an argument ends. It runs mostly on modalities - two cardinal signs both want to lead, two fixed signs both refuse to move first, two mutable signs change the plan and nobody books the tickets.
The two answers routinely disagree, and that is the useful part: a pair can be electric and exhausting, or quiet and unshakeable. Each pair page answers them separately for that reason.
Why there are no percentages here
A compatibility percentage cannot be obtained honestly: astrology has no formula that reduces a couple to a number. Sites printing “87%” are inventing it.
More importantly, the sun sign is one detail of a chart. Closeness is the Moon's department, attraction is Venus, the texture of the bond is the ascendant and Mars. Couples who are “incompatible” by Sun live happily for decades because everything else lined up. So this describes how two people negotiate - it is not a verdict.
Calculate from two birth dates
For a specific couple rather than signs in general, the compatibility calculator works from two birth dates: the shared matrix of the pair and three relationship arcana. That is about particular people, not about signs.
Frequently asked questions
Why do different sites show different percentages?
Because they make them up. There is no single formula for a “compatibility percentage” in astrology, so every site prints its own number.
What matters more than the sun sign?
The Moon (emotions and daily life), Venus (what appeals in love) and the ascendant (first impression). A real reading compares two full charts, not two signs.
Which signs are soulmates?
None and any: “soulmate” is not an astrological term and no aspect between two Sun signs promises one. What the aspect does say is how easily two people understand each other and what they will have to translate - and long, close couples exist in every one of the 78 combinations.
Astrology is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science. This describes a way of interacting, not a prediction about a couple.
A pair by full dates
A sign is one detail. In the app Luna reads compatibility from two full birth dates: three arcana of the pair, spoken aloud.
