Key days of the month
Shortest nights, strangest clouds
Nothing else in the year looks like a noctilucent cloud: a fine electric-blue mesh low in the north around midnight, the highest cloud in the atmosphere at some eighty kilometres, visible from Britain and Scandinavia and almost nowhere warmer. June has the shortest nights to fit it into. The solstice on the 21st then starts handing light back, which is a poor structure for the start of summer, and the full moon is the lowest of the year - it barely clears the trees.
Strawberry Moon, Rose Moon
Strawberry Moon marks the short wild-strawberry harvest of the north-eastern woodlands, a window of a fortnight rather than the supermarket's endless season. Europe called the same one the Rose Moon, and also the Mead Moon - from which, if you believe the popular story, comes honeymoon. Philologists are unconvinced and trace the word to a sweetness that wanes, which is a bleaker joke and possibly the true one.
June questions
Where has the Moon gone is the surprise entry every June. A thin crescent vanishes in a sky that never darkens, and the full moon sits so low that a single terrace hides it. Wedding dates come next, June being June. Then a steady trickle from readers who assume the longest day and the full moon must be connected: they are not, one is solar and the other lunar, and they drift past each other year after year.
The Moon’s position is astronomy; the beliefs and interpretations are tradition, not scientific fact.
A personal day, not just the shared backdrop
Everything on this page is shared. The Moon occupies one sign for the whole planet at a time, which is exactly what makes a calendar possible - and exactly where a calendar stops. A birth date narrows the same day down to one person, and that is what Luna reads aloud in the app: the arcana of the day, the mood, and a single concrete step.
