House 4 of the natal chart

The 4th house is roots and the room nobody else sees: family, origin, the home you came from and the one you retreat into. It sits at the very bottom of the wheel, which is the point - it is the floor the rest of the structure stands on, and it explains what a person needs privately in order to work publicly.

What sits in your house 4

A house is a stage. Who plays on it and what comes of it in your case is what Luna reads from the whole chart, by voice and without jargon.

This is an angle of the chart

The cusp of the fourth house is the IC, the “bottom” of the chart: the point of roots and of what a person calls home.

The 4th house after everyone has gone home

A phrase from your parents that you now catch yourself using. The corner of the kitchen you end up in after a bad day. An argument about where the shelf goes that was never about the shelf. The seat at the table that stayed yours after you moved out. The fourth house is made of that, and of whatever the word “home” does to you.

The 4th house is not only about your childhood

Ask an English-speaking astrologer what the fourth means and property turns up within a sentence - inherited wording rather than observation, because the old handbooks ran this sector as fathers, land and tenements, so bricks were attached to it centuries before anybody had a mortgage. Ownership is not what the house decides. Standing is: whether an address registers as a base or as somewhere you are currently staying, which people know about themselves long before the paperwork agrees. The second caption does the real damage, and almost nobody knows it is there. English horary tables gave the fourth the end of the matter - how a thing finally turns out - and over four centuries that quietly got read as the past, so the sector now arrives labelled childhood and filed as finished business. It is not behind you. It is the floor you are standing on this afternoon, and a floor is the one part of a building nobody thinks about until it moves.

A loaded 4th house, and a quiet one

Home stays in the frame with planets here: you move out, you move back, you renovate, you end up hosting everybody at Christmas whether you volunteered or not. Worth knowing before you start counting - houses are not equal in size, and depending on the latitude and the hour you were born, two or three of yours are enormous and hoover up planets by geometry alone. The fourth is often one of those. Empty just shifts the question off the main storyline, and it has never once described anybody’s childhood.

How it differs from the 10th house

Everything the tenth does can be seen from outside. Almost nothing the fourth does can. That asymmetry causes most of the trouble here: a promotion arrives with a round of congratulations, whereas keeping a household upright arrives with nothing at all, so it is the end that gets postponed first. The axis is not asking you to pick one. It is asking which end has been running on credit and for how long.

The 4th house is one of the steady ones

Houses are not 30° slices: Placidus cuts them by how long the sky takes to rise, so they stretch the further from the equator you were born. Sampled every four minutes across a day at the latitude of London, the 4th house came out anywhere between 17.5° – 39.8°.

That is one of the narrowest swings in the wheel: the 4th house stays close to a regular slice at almost any birth hour. Practically, it is one of the sturdier placements to trust when your birth time is approximate. The houses page has the full latitude table, including what happens above the Arctic Circle.

Questions about the 4th house

What does the 4th house rule, in one line?

Family, roots and home. Everything above unpacks that: what it looks like on an ordinary day, what gets misread about it, and what changes when planets land in it. If you want the twelve side by side, they are on the houses page.

Calculating the points is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

Houses work together

Luna reads the 4th house next to the Moon, because roots and comfort answer to each other - and says what you actually need at home rather than what you should want.
