The Greeks credited amethyst with exactly that quality, a clear head: the word “amethystos” means “not intoxicated”, and for centuries the violet quartz was considered the stone of a sober, lucid mind.
An honest frame first: an amethyst will not hand you ideas and will not sharpen your thinking — no stone can. It works as a symbol and a reminder: a small violet anchor saying “think with your own head”, on your hand or at your heart.
A rare case of agreement between the schools: amethyst is named for Aquarius both by astrological lists and by the jewellery birthstone table of 1912 — as the stone of February, where most of the sign's dates fall. The lists usually diverge; here they meet. A pleasant bonus: amethyst is one of the most affordable stones in the whole zodiac set.

Aquamarine reached Aquarius through the sign's very symbol: Aquarius is the water bearer, and a stone literally named “sea water” (Latin aqua marina) rhymes with it word for word. A transparent light-blue beryl, a close cousin of the emerald, it is read by the tradition as calm and clarity — the same notes as in amethyst.
You do not have to choose between them by any rule: amethyst is deep violet and “main” in most lists, aquamarine is light and cool. Take the one that speaks to you — inside the traditional set there is no wrong pick.

One rule: the stone has to please you, not the list. Hold both up to the light — deep violet against cool blue — put them against your skin and keep the one your hand reaches for. If neither responds, that is no verdict: the schools' lists disagree anyway.
