Where the aboveground and belowground rule came from

The split most gardening calendars use - waxing for what fruits above the soil, waning for roots and for cutting back - reached English readers through almanacs, which printed the Moon's phases beside the frost dates and the market dates because all three were things a farmer could not look up anywhere else. The almanac never claimed the Moon overrode the weather; it sat in a column next to it. The modern version of the same page has kept the Moon and dropped the context, which is how a two-date list ends up reading as an instruction. In August the shortage has a plain cause: the waxing half of the month holds one fertile sign and no more, while the waning half holds three. Twelve further dates are graded neither fertile nor barren, and about those the tradition says nothing whatever.
