• Root crops (carrots, beets, potatoes) and pruning: 1, 2, 6, 7, 29, 30

Two systems, one name

The older one is the almanac split used in the table below: phase decides direction - waxing for what is harvested above the soil, waning for what is harvested below it - while the sign only grades how fertile the day is. The twentieth-century biodynamic version replaced that with a four-way scheme tied to the elements, sorting dates into root, leaf, flower and fruit and treating the sign as the instruction rather than the grade. Under the first, a September date in a water sign on the waxing side is a good one for tomatoes; under the second it is a leaf date and the tomatoes wait. Neither system is derived from the other, and no experimental result picks between them. This page names the one it uses and keeps to it, which is why its counts for the month - five, six, and six more graded barren - will not match a biodynamic calendar at all.
