Ten barren dates, and where the list came from

The fertility grades attached to the twelve signs come from the same medieval stream of ideas as the assignment of signs to parts of the body, and they were fixed in print long before anyone could test them. Their internal logic is elemental: water signs are wet and therefore fertile, fire signs are dry and therefore barren, which is a tidy scheme rather than an agronomic observation. November spends a third of its days in fire and air signs, and that alone is why its barren count is the largest of the twelve. What the tradition leaves for those dates is the work that is not about growth - cutting back, clearing, tidying - a use it never has to justify, because nothing is being asked to germinate.
