What really decides a sowing date
Seed germinates as a function of soil temperature, moisture and its own dormancy, and every one of those can be measured. Carrot will sit inert in cold ground for weeks and then come up all at once when the soil warms; lettuce does the opposite and refuses to germinate once the soil is too warm. A thermometer pushed into the bed answers the question directly, which is why an almanac printed the Moon table and the frost dates on facing pages rather than one instead of the other. The lunar column is a tiebreaker, and this page is written on the assumption that its reader already knows as much. October leaves thirteen dates graded neither fertile nor barren, so the tiebreaker has room to work even before the weather is consulted.
