Two clocks that never agree

One clock measures a lap of the zodiac, the Moon back to the same stars, and it runs for 27.3 days. The other measures a lap of phases, new moon to new moon, and it is longer because the Sun has moved on in the meantime and the Moon has to catch up: 29.5 days on the count from this ephemeris. The gap of a little over two days per cycle is the engine of the entire calendar. It is why the favoured signs arrive at a different phase every month, why the run of good days walks three or four days earlier through each successive month, and why a table like the one below has to be recomputed rather than reprinted. In June the two clocks put the run at the 8th to the 11th, with the new moon on the 4th and the full moon on the 19th.
