The beat behind the largest and smallest full moons

Two lunar months run at once. The cycle of phases takes 29.5306 days; the cycle of distance, perigee back to perigee, takes 27.5545. Because they differ, the place in its orbit where the Moon happens to be full slides forward month after month, and the two only line up again after roughly 13.9 phase cycles. That is the whole of the supermoon story: they are not rare visitors but the crest of a wave, and this calendar catches the crest in November, December and January and the trough in July. None of it touches the haircut table, which looks only at sign and phase. July's favoured days are the 5th to the 8th, with the new moon of the 4th sitting immediately before them.

This is folklore, not dermatology: the Moon’s position on this page is computed with Swiss Ephemeris, no research links the phase to hair growth, and a haircut on an “unfavourable” day harms nothing. How the rules work.
