House 6 of the natal chart

The 6th house is the unglamorous one: routine, work habits, the craft that only improves by repetition, the small systems that keep a life from sliding. It is read for how somebody organises their days and what kind of order they need around them - and to be plain about it, this is not a medical chapter and nothing in it is a diagnosis.

What sits in your house 6

A house is a stage. Who plays on it and what comes of it in your case is what Luna reads from the whole chart, by voice and without jargon.

The 6th house between nine and six

Some people wash the cup immediately, some by nightfall, and both habits live in the sixth house. So does the alarm set for the same hour on a Sunday, the folders on the desktop, and the stretch of afternoon when nothing more gets done. Crossing an item off a list gives more satisfaction than it should. This is the house of an ordinary Tuesday.

The 6th house is not a health report - and here is why we say so

Valetudo is the word the Latin tables put over the sixth, and English handbooks rendered it as the house of illness - a caption that has been doing damage for four centuries and still turns up in free chart readings. Deal with the fear first, because nothing is being kept from you: no chart diagnoses anybody, and anything to do with your actual health belongs with a doctor and stays with the doctor. What the translation lost is that valetudo meant condition in the neutral sense, how a thing is keeping, good or bad. Read the sixth as the maintenance layer - everything that stops working the moment you stop redoing it, which turns out to be most of what a life is made of. The second misreading comes from this sector’s other inherited caption, servants, later tidied up into work: people who are between jobs, or raising children, or retired, read the sixth as temporarily switched off. Nobody has ever been exempt from maintenance, and no employer was ever required for it.

A crowded 6th house, and an empty one

Does your week have a shape you designed, or one that assembled itself while you were not looking? A crowded sixth designs it down to the hour and takes it badly when the shape breaks. An empty one lets the week form itself and somehow arrives at Friday with the same amount done. There is no tidier version here, only two different relationships with a calendar.

How it differs from the 12th house

Six in the evening, two hours left in the day. The sixth wants them used: the backlog, the admin, the form that has been waiting since April. The twelfth wants them empty and cannot produce one argument the sixth will accept. That negotiation runs most evenings for a lifetime and nobody wins it outright, which is probably the correct outcome.

Why the 6th house can be twice the size of another

Houses are not 30° slices: Placidus cuts them by how long the sky takes to rise, so they stretch the further from the equator you were born. Sampled every four minutes across a day at the latitude of London, the 6th house came out anywhere between 15.7° – 60.6°.

That is the widest swing any house gets, because the 6th sits on or beside the horizon axis, and the angle at which the ecliptic crosses the horizon changes hour by hour. A big 6th house does not mean the subject matters more — it means the sky was rising slowly at your birth hour, and it is why a planet near this cusp can change houses if your birth time is off by half an hour. The houses page has the full latitude table, including what happens above the Arctic Circle.

Questions about the 6th house

What does the 6th house rule, in one line?

Work, routines and daily rhythm. Everything above unpacks that: what it looks like on an ordinary day, what gets misread about it, and what changes when planets land in it. If you want the twelve side by side, they are on the houses page.

Calculating the points is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

Houses work together

Luna reads the 6th house as rhythm and craft - never as symptoms - and points at the routine that would give you back an hour a week.
