The box of old things you finally drive to the tip, and the odd lightness afterwards. That is eighth house ground: trust, resources that are not only yours, and letting go of what is finished.
The 8th house is not the house of death
No sector collects more theatre than the eighth, and the theatre has a traceable source: the Latin word over it was mors, and English translations kept the death label instead of the meaning underneath it. A four-hundred-year-old caption is not evidence about your life. What the eighth measures is how much truth you can be in a room with, your own and somebody else’s, once the comfortable version has stopped being available. It also covers everything with two names on it - the joint account, the loan, the promise nobody wrote down. That combination is why people with a busy eighth tend to grow up a few years ahead of their friends.
A busy 8th house, and one with nobody in it
An empty eighth is not a shortage of trust, and nobody was issued less of it at birth. It says only that shared money and other people’s confidences are not the hinge your life turns on. Planets in there make it exactly that hinge - you notice the thing that is not being said, you are the one people tell, and a joint account holds no dread for you.
How it differs from the 2nd house
How much is not the question in this house. Who else has a claim on it is, and what that feels like at three in the morning. Somebody who can lend, borrow and share an account without their stomach turning over has done serious work here whatever the balance says - and that work is invisible from the second, which only ever had to answer to one person.
How wide the 8th house actually is
Houses are not 30° slices: Placidus cuts them by how long the sky takes to rise, so they stretch the further from the equator you were born. Sampled every four minutes across a day at the latitude of London, the 8th house came out anywhere between 16.8° – 47.7°.
That is a middling swing — enough that “the 8th house is a twelfth of the chart” is a useful simplification rather than a fact, and enough that a planet sitting right on the cusp deserves a second look at your birth certificate.
