Mars in the natal chart

Mars is the engine of a birth chart: drive, appetite, courage, and the particular way somebody goes after a thing they want. It sets the style of action - quick spark or long steady push - and it is also where anger lives, which is why one placement explains both the ambition and the slammed drawer. Read it as fuel with a preferred route.

Where Mars sits in your chart

A position is an address, not a story. What it means in your case, together with the rest of the chart, is what Luna reads: a full reading by voice, in plain words.

Mars on an ordinary day

Mars leaves the clearest trail in the chart and you have already written it down: the things you began this year, and the exact point at which each one stopped. Read the stopping points rather than the starts. One person runs out at the first negotiation, another at the paperwork, another only once the thing is finished and there is nothing left to push against. The second record is your calendar in a week when everything went wrong - some people book more into it and some cancel all of it, and both are the same supply of energy choosing a direction.

Mars in Aries, Mars in Virgo: the sign as a style of wanting

The interesting part is not how somebody fights but how they say no. Some refuse flatly and offer no reason at all. Others say yes and then let the thing quietly not happen, which is the same refusal wearing whatever costume the sign picked out.

  12. ♓︎
    Pisces

feels the theme long before it can define it

Mars usually spends 57 days in a sign - or 235 if it doubles back

Mars is the first planet slow enough for the sign to feel like a description rather than a season: 57 days per sign on average. But it retrogrades 9.5% of the time, roughly once every two years, and a loop caught inside one sign stretches the stay to as much as 235 days. So “Mars in Virgo” can mean a fortnight of babies or most of a year of them, depending on which pass you arrived on - worth knowing before deciding how rare your drive is.

Mars by house: the arena you are willing to fight in

Notice what you are willing to be rude about; that is the house. A second-house Mars does it over money - the haggle, the flat refusal to work for exposure, the invoice sent on the day it falls due - and nothing else in the week provokes them half as much.

What gets misread about Mars

Two things loaded this planet before anybody read a word of its description: the name of a war god, and the English tradition’s habit of filing it as the lesser malefic - a technical term that, printed in English, simply reads as bad. Four centuries on, people describe their own Mars apologetically, as though a strong one needed excusing. The older descriptions were far less moral than that and much more physical: Mars was the planet of iron and of tools that cut, of the surgeon’s hand as much as the soldier’s. Those are occupations, not temperaments. Read it as the capacity to make something move that was not going to move on its own, and the embarrassment goes, because nobody apologises for being able to shift furniture. The second misreading is arithmetic. A difficult Mars is assumed to mean too much of the stuff, when the commoner story by a distance is somebody who was never once given permission to use theirs.

Mars and Saturn: where the line runs

Time it. Mars is brilliant over six weeks: the flat repainted, the argument finally had, a running habit built in a fortnight of near-total conviction. Ask it for four years and it wanders off. Saturn has no opening speed whatsoever and does not need any, because it is still turning up in the second winter when the novelty has been gone for months. The familiar pattern is a strong Mars with the Saturn gear never quite engaged - nine impressive beginnings and a garage full of equipment.

When Mars is working at full strength

Mars needs resistance and a scoreboard. It works where effort visibly moves something - a distance, a weight, a queue of jobs going down - and it corrodes where the effort vanishes into a process with no edge. Anger is the tell. When this planet has nowhere legitimate to push, it stops arriving as energy and starts arriving as irritation with people who did nothing.

Questions about Mars

What is Mars in charge of in a natal chart?

Mars rules the supply of energy and the route it takes: starting, pushing, holding a line, stopping when the thing is done. It describes the supply rather than the temperament - two people who come across very differently can be running the same amount of it.

Calculating the positions is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

One planet is part of the picture

Luna reads Mars with the house it fell in and whatever it argues with, so “where does my energy go” gets an address instead of an adjective.
