Mercury in the natal chart

Mercury in a birth chart is how a mind takes the world in and hands it back: thinking speed, speech, humour, the shape of curiosity. It shows whether somebody learns by talking, reading or doing, how they argue and how they listen, and which subjects make their sentences suddenly get faster. It is the traffic of a chart rather than its destination.

Where Mercury sits in your chart

A position is an address, not a story. What it means in your case, together with the rest of the chart, is what Luna reads: a full reading by voice, in plain words.

Mercury on an ordinary day

The archive is your sent folder, and ten minutes in it beats any description. One person answers in a line and considers the matter closed; another sends four messages because the thought arrived in four pieces; a third writes nothing for a day and then produces the finished version. None of that is intelligence, it is transport. The same record holds the half that descriptions skip - how long a thought has to wait before it can be said. For some people there is no gap at all, and for others it is a full day, and the Thursday version is genuinely better than anything that was available on Wednesday.

Mercury in Pisces, Mercury in Gemini: the sign as an accent

Read the last line of somebody’s messages: one person signs off in three words and considers the matter closed. Another adds a postscript, then a caveat, then a joke to soften the caveat. Same information twice over - the sign only chose the packaging.

  1. ♈︎
    Aries

starts before the plan is finished, and argues about it afterwards

  2. ♉︎
    Taurus

gives the theme weight, and refuses to be hurried into it

  3. ♊︎
    Gemini

turns the theme into questions and collects several answers

  4. ♋︎
    Cancer

makes the theme safe first and everything else second

  5. ♌︎
    Leo

takes the theme out of private life and performs it

  6. ♍︎
    Virgo

breaks the theme into steps and tidies the edges

  7. ♎︎
    Libra

weighs the theme against someone else’s version of it

  8. ♏︎
    Scorpio

goes all the way in, because half-measures are not on offer

  9. ♐︎
    Sagittarius

takes the theme further than anyone asked it to go

  10. ♑︎
    Capricorn

gives the theme a timeline and then outlasts it

  11. ♒︎
    Aquarius

refuses the standard version even when the standard works

  12. ♓︎
    Pisces

feels the theme long before it can define it

Mercury never gets more than 27.8° from the Sun

That single fact explains most of Mercury’s behaviour in a chart. Because it is chained to the Sun, your Mercury is in your Sun sign or in one of its two neighbours - never the opposite side of the wheel - and geocentrically it averages the same 30.4 days per sign. What breaks the rhythm is retrogradation: Mercury spends 19.2% of its life moving backwards, and one loop can hold it in a single sign for 69 days, more than twice the usual visit.

Mercury by house: the subject you cannot stop talking about

A ninth-house Mercury cannot answer a simple question simply. Asked for directions, it explains the layout of the whole district, and it is genuinely trying to help. That is the house at work rather than a personality flaw.

What gets misread about Mercury

The English keyword for Mercury is the mind, and English has treated the mind as a measurable quantity ever since the first intelligence tests - so the placement gets graded. Strong Mercury clever, weak Mercury slow. Neither is a thing it measures. The older name is the more accurate one: Mercury was the messenger, and a messenger is judged on delivery rather than on brilliance - the right thing, to the right person, still intact on arrival. Read it as route and format. The colleague who takes eleven seconds to answer is often holding three layers of a problem at once, and the one who never pauses may simply have fast access to vocabulary. And there is one half of this planet that English never gave a keyword to at all, which is why nobody goes looking for it: reception. How an explanation lands on you, and how long it takes you to admit that it did not.

Mercury and Jupiter: where the line runs

Give the two of them the same book. Mercury comes back with the argument on page 104 and a note that the sourcing is thin. Jupiter comes back changed and cannot tell you which chapter did it. In a meeting the difference embarrasses both of them: one has the figures and no idea what they are for, the other has a vision and a spreadsheet that will not survive an accountant. Most of us run one of these and hire the other.

When Mercury is working at full strength

Mercury sharpens against a real listener. Not an audience: one person who interrupts with the question you had not thought of. Teaching a beginner does more for it in a month than a year of reading, and writing to a named human beats writing to nobody in particular. What dulls it is the illusion of learning - a saved article counts for nothing until somebody has argued with you about it.

Questions about Mercury

What is Mercury in charge of in a natal chart?

Information travelling in both directions: taking it in and handing it back out. Reading, listening, negotiating and asking a second time after a bad explanation all belong here, together with the unglamorous job of getting a message to arrive intact.

Calculating the positions is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

One planet is part of the picture

Luna reads Mercury next to the Moon and Mars, because a mind is only ever as calm as the mood carrying it. Real ephemerides, plain sentences, out loud.
