Neptune in the natal chart

Neptune is where the edges of the practical world go soft in a birth chart: imagination, empathy, the pull towards something larger than the schedule. It shows where inspiration arrives unsummoned, and equally where a person is most willing to be charmed by a good story. Fourteen years to a sign, so the personal part of it lives in the house.

Where Neptune sits in your chart

A position is an address, not a story. What it means in your case, together with the rest of the chart, is what Luna reads: a full reading by voice, in plain words.

Neptune on an ordinary day

The evidence is the gap between an evening and what you can report about it afterwards. Some people finish a film and hand you a verdict; others cannot be spoken to for an hour and could not say why. Neptune is the setting for how much gets through the walls - other people’s moods arriving in a room before anybody has spoken, news from a country you have never visited spoiling a Tuesday. It also runs the way you tell the truth: leaving out the part that would hurt somebody, and never once experiencing that as lying.

Neptune in a sign covers fourteen years of people

Films made while you were small are a decent guide here. Neptune’s sign colours what a whole age group found worth longing for, and longing turns out to be contagious: you can dislike the music of your own adolescence and still know every word of it.

Fourteen years to a sign: Neptune is a mood of an era

Counting every visit, Neptune spends 13.6 years in a sign, and it is retrograde 42.9% of the time. Anyone born in a fourteen-year window shares the placement, which is why “Neptune in Capricorn” describes what a whole cohort was collectively dreaming about and dodging. Personal Neptune lives one level down - in the house it occupies and in whether it touches your Sun, Moon or rising sign closely enough to count.

Neptune by house: where the edges of your life go soft

Neptune softens one area and leaves the rest sharp. Whichever house it occupies is where you are most likely to fill in the blanks about a person yourself, then be surprised by who they turned out to be. In the eleventh that means the group you joined and the shared cause everybody was supposedly there for.

What gets misread about Neptune

There is a joke buried in this one. Neptune is the only planet found by arithmetic - worked out on paper in 1846 and then pointed at, rather than stumbled upon - and it is the one English handbooks label illusion, deception and fog. That vocabulary is Victorian and it is about seances and intoxication rather than about the person reading it, but the effect on a modern reader is immediate: they come away suspicious of their own sensitivity. Nothing here is a warning about your character. What the placement sets is permeability - how much of a room reaches you before anybody has spoken, how much of somebody else’s bad week you carry home in your own coat. High permeability is a working asset in half a dozen trades and it has an obvious running cost, and those are one setting rather than a virtue and a fault.

Neptune and the Moon: where the line runs

Both read as softness from outside, so they get run together. The Moon knows the way back - the same route home, the same three people, a rhythm it could find in the dark. Neptune has no interest at all in the way back. It wants the edges to go: the second hour of a gig, a novel that eats a whole Sunday, prayer, a screen at three in the morning. Neither of those is a fault. The trouble starts when the dissolving has nothing solid waiting on the other side of it.

When Neptune is working at full strength

Neptune works when the sensitivity is aimed at something and switched off elsewhere. In practice that is two things: a regular activity that uses the imagination on purpose, and one hard edge in the week that does not move for anybody’s feelings, including yours. Without the second the first drains away. This is the placement where people give until there is nothing left and call it kindness.

Questions about Neptune

What is Neptune in charge of in a natal chart?

Imagination and sensitivity - the part of a chart that answers to what cannot be measured: music, faith, the mood of a room. It describes a way of perceiving, not a warning about being deceived.

Calculating the positions is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

One planet is part of the picture

Luna reads Neptune through its house and its aspects, which is the only place a fourteen-year placement turns into something about you.
