Sun in the natal chart

The Sun in a birth chart is the part of a person that does not change with the company they are in: what they are here to become, where the energy comes from, and what makes a week feel worth having. Its sign gives the direction; its house names the stage where that light is meant to be visible. Themes attached to the Sun keep coming back until they are actually lived rather than admired from a distance.

Where the Sun sits in your chart

A position is an address, not a story. What it means in your case, together with the rest of the chart, is what Luna reads: a full reading by voice, in plain words.

The Sun on an ordinary day

The record is the sentence you use to introduce yourself somewhere nobody can hire you. Most people give a job title. Some give the thing they happen to be in the middle of, and that second version is a Sun that has been let out of the house. It shows up again in the hour that gets logged nowhere - the reading, the making, the argument you cannot stay out of - which is why a life can look complete on paper and still be missing the one item nobody was ever paying for.

Sun in Aries, Sun in Scorpio: what the sign really changes

Watch which compliment actually lands. Told they are kind, one person shrugs it off; told they are formidable, they sit up straighter. For somebody else it works the other way round, and the sign is most of that difference.

  1. ♈︎
    Aries

starts before the plan is finished, and argues about it afterwards

  2. ♉︎
    Taurus

gives the theme weight, and refuses to be hurried into it

  3. ♊︎
    Gemini

turns the theme into questions and collects several answers

  4. ♋︎
    Cancer

makes the theme safe first and everything else second

  5. ♌︎
    Leo

takes the theme out of private life and performs it

  6. ♍︎
    Virgo

breaks the theme into steps and tidies the edges

  7. ♎︎
    Libra

weighs the theme against someone else’s version of it

  8. ♏︎
    Scorpio

goes all the way in, because half-measures are not on offer

  9. ♐︎
    Sagittarius

takes the theme further than anyone asked it to go

  10. ♑︎
    Capricorn

gives the theme a timeline and then outlasts it

  11. ♒︎
    Aquarius

refuses the standard version even when the standard works

  12. ♓︎
    Pisces

feels the theme long before it can define it

The Sun holds a sign for 30.4 days, and never turns back

Measured across 1900–2100, the Sun crosses one sign in 30.4 days and never reverses. The signs are not quite equal, though: Cancer takes 31.45 days and Capricorn only 29.31, because the Earth is at its furthest from the Sun in early July and moving slowest just then. That steadiness is exactly why a Sun sign can be read off a date alone, and why it is the one piece of a chart a magazine can print as a table. The table still slips: the changeover lands on a different calendar date about 3.3% of the time, which is what the sun sign page is for.

Which house the Sun lands in, and why it changes everything

Ask where the batteries fill up rather than drain. A tenth-house Sun runs on being counted on in public, and take the visibility away and the same person goes flat inside a fortnight without ever working out why.

What gets misread about the Sun

Open any English textbook and the keyword printed beside the Sun is ego. In the technical vocabulary that meant the organising centre of a person, the part everything else arranges itself around; in ordinary English it drifted towards vanity two generations ago and never came back. So readers with a busy Sun conclude they are being called self-important, and readers with a quiet one conclude something is missing. Neither is in there. What the placement holds is a direction of travel and an appetite - the thing a person is walking towards, whether or not they have taken a step in twenty years. That distinction explains the commonest sentence in astrology, “I am a Virgo, so,” which almost always finishes with an excuse. A list of traits can be used to get out of things. A direction cannot.

The Sun and the rising sign: where the line runs

Your rising sign handles the first ninety seconds and handles them well. It sets the volume and picks the opening joke, and strangers file all of that as who you are. The Sun turns up later, once the room has thinned out and there is nothing left to manage. Being good at arriving and knowing what you came for are separate talents, and only one of them shows on a first meeting.

When the Sun is working at full strength

The Sun needs an audience of at least one and a thing that is yours. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains why it dims across a decade of sensible postponement rather than in any single event. Two hours a week that nobody gets a progress report on is a fair test. Run it for a month and watch what comes back - usually energy, in places that had nothing to do with the two hours.

Sun retrograde: what it means

The Sun is never retrograde: apparent backward motion comes from orbital overtaking, and the luminaries do not move that way relative to Earth.

Questions about the Sun

What is the Sun in charge of in a natal chart?

Vitality and purpose - the part of a chart that says what a person is for rather than what they are like. It is also the one placement almost everybody already knows about themselves, which is why it carries far more weight in conversation than it does inside the chart.

Calculating the positions is astronomy; interpreting them is a symbolic system for self-reflection, not science.

One planet is part of the picture

Luna starts where a sun sign stops. She takes the degree, the house it fell in and the two planets closest to it, and tells you what that combination wants from an ordinary week.
