Carbon, squeezed until nothing on the planet can scratch it - that is the whole story of a diamond, and it is why the older correspondence tables handed it to the first sign of the zodiac. Aries is cardinal fire ruled by Mars; the tradition wanted a stone that does not yield, and there is exactly one mineral that cannot be scratched by anything except itself. The reading is a metaphor rather than a mechanism, but it is at least a metaphor that fits.
What a diamond will not do is make anyone braver, luckier or better off, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The honest job of a sign-stone is smaller and far more usable: you put it on, you catch it in the light somewhere in the middle of the afternoon, and it reminds you what you decided at the start of the month. For a sign that begins things at speed and loses interest at the same speed, a reminder that cannot be misplaced is worth more than a promise.
Two practical notes, since this is the expensive end of the whole zodiac table. Size was never part of the tradition - a two-millimetre stone in a plain setting carries precisely the meaning a five-carat one does. Garnet is the way in, and there is nothing second-rate about it. It is not a single mineral but a family - the dark wine red of almandine, the brighter red of pyrope, and green varieties most people never connect with the name - and European tradition tied the red ones to endurance, which Aries usually needs rather more than courage. Jewellery charts file garnet under January instead of under the sign, so if you meet it there, both filings are correct.
Ruby is the occasion stone. The tradition gave the red fire-stone to more than one fire sign and left them to sort it out, and in practice it is the Aries pick that reads as ceremonial: a ruby is what goes on when the day is supposed to count for something.
How to choose and wear it
All three stones here are hard, which makes this an unusually low-effort list: warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a soft brush, finished. The one thing hardness does not protect against is a knock. A diamond splits along its cleavage planes if a corner catches a door frame, so a high solitaire belongs on a hand that does not do much and a bezel or low setting belongs on one that does.
Choose by looking rather than by list. Hold the stone against your own skin in daylight instead of under the shop’s spotlights, which exist to make everything sparkle, and wear it for a minute before deciding. If none of the three does anything for you, no test has been failed - the lists contradict one another anyway, and a stone you never reach for reminds you of nothing.
