The main stone: Emerald
The emerald landed on Taurus through its ruler: the sign is governed by Venus, and the deep green stone of spring and flourishing gardens went to the sign that grows things best — a garden, a home, a craft, a relationship. Patience, loyalty and a taste for the real is what astrological schools read both in Taurus and in the “character” of an emerald: for centuries this stone was valued not for sparkle but for the depth of its green.
Taurus is a rare case where the astrological and the jewellery traditions agree. In the American birthstone table of 1912 the emerald is the stone of May — and most of May belongs to Taurus. The two systems usually argue with each other; here they speak with one voice.
An honest frame: an emerald will not attract wealth to a Taurus and will not strengthen a relationship — no stone can. It works as a symbol and a reminder: a small green anchor that says “I grow at my own pace, and that pace is right”. In that role it is entirely real — and it does not require a large stone in an expensive setting.
Other Taurus stones
Agate is the second Taurus stone and the exact opposite of the emerald in price: one of the most affordable stones there is. Layered, warm, earthy — every slice carries its own pattern of bands, and no two are alike. The tradition ties agate to calm and reliability — the most Taurean qualities of all.
Take a look at moss agate: it holds green “branches” inside, like a garden frozen in stone. For Taurus it is the closest you can get to the emerald theme — the same greenery and growth at a completely different price.
How to choose and wear it
The emerald is a stone for gentle wear: it almost always carries fine inner fissures, so an everyday ring is not the best format. A pendant or earrings are safer, and it is worth taking the stone off before cleaning or sport. Clean it only with warm soapy water, no ultrasonic baths: most emeralds are oiled, and aggressive cleaning damages the stone.
Agate, on the contrary, is an indestructible everyday option: beads, a ring, a keychain — anything. A beautiful agate slice also lives well simply on your desk — a reminder-stone your eyes land on between tasks. Choose with your eyes: the banding of every stone is unique, and “yours” is usually recognised at once.
Why sources disagree on the stones
Lists of stones for Taurus differ from book to book and shop to shop — and that is normal: there is no single canon. The astrological tradition derived stones from ruling planets and elements, the jewellery tradition from the month of birth (the American birthstone table of 1912), and shops happily add to the lists whatever sits in the display case.
We fixed the overlap of the most common lists — the core that repeats most often. If another source names a different stone for you, neither list is wrong: pick the stone from the tradition that you actually like.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Taurus birthstone?
The traditional main stone for Taurus is the emerald, and the sign is also linked with agate. There is no single canon: lists vary between schools, so no pick from this set is “wrong”.
There are tiny fissures and bubbles inside my emerald — is it a defect or a fake?
The opposite: it is almost a passport of a natural stone. The vast majority of real emeralds carry inclusions — jewellers call them the “jardin”, the garden. What should alert you is a perfectly clean and suspiciously cheap stone: that is most likely glass or a synthetic.
An emerald is expensive — what can replace it?
Agate: it is on the same traditional Taurus list and costs orders of magnitude less. If you want to keep the green, look at moss agate — greenery inside the stone; the meaning of a symbol-stone does not depend on its price.

Matching stones to zodiac signs is a tradition, not science: there is no single canonical list, and schools disagree. Stones do not heal and do not guarantee events — for health questions, see a doctor. A stone here is a symbol and a reminder, nothing more and nothing less.
