Cancer has the most transparent match of all twelve: the sign is ruled by the Moon, and the tradition gave it the moonstone. Turn the mineral and a soft bluish light floats across it; the effect is called adularescence, and once you have seen it, you will never ask why the stone is named after the Moon. There is no mysticism in the glow itself — it is the optics of ultra-thin inner layers — but that only makes the pair “the Moon's sign — the Moon's stone” more honest.
The tradition read the sign's character straight in the stone: Cancer is about home, memory, care and tides of mood, and schools tied the moonstone's soft changing light to intuition and tenderness. Of all the zodiac stones this one is the quietest: it does not sparkle, it glows.
An honest frame: a moonstone will not manage your moods and will not shield you from hurt — no stone can. It works as a symbol and a reminder: a small anchor that says “I have a right to my own tides”. For Cancer that may be the kindest reminder there is.

Pearls like being worn — life on the skin does not wear them out; the one rule is to put them on after perfume and hairspray and wipe them with a soft cloth afterwards. Moonstone is most beautiful in motion — the glow floats as the stone turns, so earrings and pendants show it better than a display case. And if you want a reminder-stone at home, a small rough moonstone on a shelf does the job perfectly.

Lists of stones for Cancer differ from book to book and shop to shop — and that is normal: there is no single canon. The astrological tradition derived stones from ruling planets and elements, the jewellery tradition from the month of birth (the American birthstone table of 1912), and shops happily add to the lists whatever sits in the display case.
