The physics is worth a paragraph because it explains the whole correspondence. Moonstone is feldspar that cooled slowly enough to separate into microscopically thin alternating layers; light entering the stone scatters between them and comes back out as a glow that seems to float somewhere below the surface rather than sit on it. Nothing is luminous - it is scattering - but it looks precisely like moonlight on water, and a tradition busy matching stones to planets needed no more than that.
Cardinal water ruled by the Moon, and the older lists are consistent here in a way they are not for most signs: open any school and some version of a moon-white stone comes up. What they attached to it was interior weather rather than achievement - noticing what you feel before it becomes a mood everyone else has to steer around. None of which the stone performs for you: adularescence is optics, not care. It is a marker, and Cancer is the sign that checks on everyone else first and its own state last, so a marker glimpsed twenty times a day earns its keep.
One buying trap belongs here rather than lower down. Most of what is sold as rainbow moonstone is white labradorite, a related feldspar with a different, flashier blue shimmer - pretty, inexpensive, and not the same mineral. True moonstone is quieter: a single sheet of light that travels as you tilt it, rather than patches of colour that come and go.
Other Cancer stones
Pearl is the only thing on this site that was once alive. A mollusc lays nacre - aragonite platelets held in protein - around an irritant, one microscopic layer at a time, for years; the sheen is light bouncing between those layers, which is why a real pearl feels faintly gritty against a tooth while a glass imitation feels glass-smooth. It is June’s stone in the jewellery chart as well, so anyone born in the first month of Cancer collects it twice.
Emerald arrives from a different direction and is the one on this list worth questioning. Most schools give it to Taurus; a minority route it to Cancer through Venus, which sits well in this stretch of the zodiac in some systems. It is here because it appears in enough lists to count - but if it feels borrowed, it probably is, and leaving it out costs nothing.
How to choose and wear it
This is the softest list on the site and it needs a different habit from a diamond one. Pearl and moonstone both sit at Mohs 6 or below, moonstone splits along an internal plane if it takes a sharp knock, and both object to everything a bathroom contains: perfume, hairspray, acidic cleaners, ultrasonic machines. Pendants and earrings survive the decades far better than rings on a hand that works.
Buy in daylight and keep the stone moving while you look. A moonstone whose light comes out in a sheet that travels with your hand is worth more than a larger one that only glows from a single angle. On a pearl, look for a deep glow that appears to come from underneath rather than a shine sitting on top, and check that the drill holes are clean. Restring a strand you wear often every year or two, because silk stretches and it always gives way in the street.

Lists of stones for Cancer differ from book to book and shop to shop - and that is normal: there is no single canon. The astrological tradition derived stones from ruling planets and elements, the jewellery tradition from the month of birth (the American birthstone table of 1912), and shops happily add to the lists whatever sits in the display case.
