The opal went to Libra for its signature trick — the play of colour. Inside one stone, flashes of green, blue, pink and gold live side by side, and none of them shouts down the others. For the sign whose symbol is a pair of scales in balance and whose talent is hearing all sides at once, no rhyme could be more precise: almost every school assigns the opal to Libra.
Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and harmony, and here too the opal fits: it is one of the most decorative stones there is, and no two opals are alike — each shimmers in its own way. The October stone of the American birthstone table is also the opal: a rare case where the astrological and jewellery traditions agree.
An honest frame: an opal will not teach you to negotiate and will not bring harmony into a relationship — no stone can. It works as a symbol and a reminder: “balance is my craft, and I know how to do it.” In that role a beautiful stone is honest through and through.

Lapis lazuli is a deep blue stone with golden sparks of pyrite, a favourite of jewellers as far back as ancient Egypt: pharaohs' ornaments were carved from it, and ground to powder it served painters for centuries as ultramarine. The tradition gives it to Libra for the same harmony, only quieter than the opal's: a deep evening sky with golden points of stars. The calm option next to the shimmering opal — and noticeably more affordable.
How to choose and wear it
Choose an opal only in person: the play of colour does not survive photos, and every stone shimmers differently. It is also more delicate than most gems: an opal contains water, so it dislikes heat, dryness and household chemicals — a pendant or earrings are safer for it than an everyday ring, and it is best stored away from harder stones.
Lapis is simpler but also soft: take it off before cleaning and sport, skip ultrasonic cleaners — warm water and a soft cloth are enough. And remember: a reminder-stone does not have to hang around your neck — a small lapis on your desk or a keychain in your pocket carries the same meaning.
Why sources disagree on the stones
Lists of stones for Libra differ from book to book and shop to shop — and that is normal: there is no single canon. The astrological tradition derived stones from ruling planets and elements, the jewellery tradition from the month of birth (the American birthstone table of 1912), and shops happily add to the lists whatever sits in the display case.

An opal is delicate — what should I wear daily?
Lapis lazuli: it is on the same Libra list, lives happily in a pendant or bracelet and costs noticeably less. Keep the opal for the days that call for its shimmer; doublets and triplets (a thin opal on a backing) are a tougher and cheaper compromise — just keep them away from water.
