The blue is iron and titanium sitting in the crystal lattice; change the trace elements and the rest of the range appears, and put chromium in instead and the same mineral is called ruby. That single element is the whole difference between the Leo stone and this one. Corundum is Mohs 9, harder than anything on Earth except diamond, and it has no cleavage plane to split along, which makes sapphire the most nearly indestructible thing on the zodiac table.
Mercury rules Virgo, and the older tables reached for a stone associated with clear thinking and, in several traditions, with keeping one’s word - medieval clergy wore it for precisely that reason. Whether that reading carries any weight is a matter of taste; what is not a matter of taste is that a Mohs 9 stone survives a life involving hands, keyboards, washing-up and other people’s children.
One thing to know before a shop mentions it: virtually all sapphire is heat-treated, at temperatures that finish what the ground started, and this has been routine for centuries. It is permanent and needs no upkeep. What does need declaring is diffusion or fracture-filling, which are different processes carrying different values, and a seller who cannot say which category a stone falls into is a seller to leave.
Worth a line for anyone who arrived from a birthstone chart rather than a horoscope: September’s stone in the jewellery calendar is the sapphire as well, so a Virgo born from the first of the month gets the same answer twice over. Agate is the plain twin, and Virgo is not the only sign the table hands it to. Banded chalcedony: common, quartz-tough, patterned differently in every piece. The tradition seems to have wanted it here for the opposite reason it wanted sapphire - nothing about an agate is precious, and it can be handled all day without a second thought.
It also solves a problem the list creates. A sapphire at any real size is an investment, and a sign that dislikes fuss will often leave one in a drawer; a small carved agate on a chain does the same symbolic work for the price of lunch. If only one of the two is ever going to be owned, own the one nobody will be nervous about.
How to choose and wear it
This is the wear-and-forget list, and the advice is correspondingly short. Warm water, washing-up liquid, a soft brush, for both. Sapphire tolerates an ultrasonic cleaner unless it has been fracture-filled, which is the one case worth asking about; agate needs nothing at all. Neither fades, neither dissolves, neither has an opinion about hand cream.
Which means the thinking goes into the setting instead. Since the stone outlasts everything around it, money is better spent on the metalwork than on another half-carat: worn claws lose stones, and a stone lost from a tired mount is a far commoner ending than a stone damaged. A smaller sapphire in a well-made setting will still be on a hand in forty years.
Why sources disagree on the stones
Lists of stones for Virgo differ from book to book and shop to shop - and that is normal: there is no single canon. The astrological tradition derived stones from ruling planets and elements, the jewellery tradition from the month of birth (the American birthstone table of 1912), and shops happily add to the lists whatever sits in the display case.

What is the Virgo birthstone?
The traditional main stone for Virgo is the sapphire, and the sign is also linked with agate. There is no single canon: lists vary between schools, so no pick from this set is “wrong”.
Do sapphires have to be blue?
No. Every colour of corundum except red counts as sapphire - yellow, green, pink, violet, colourless, and the pink-orange padparadscha. Blue became the default only because it is what the trade sells most of. Any of them is the Virgo stone by the tradition’s own logic, which names a mineral rather than a shade.
Does a laboratory-grown sapphire still count?
It is the same mineral with the same hardness, grown in weeks rather than in rock, at a small fraction of the price; laboratories have produced it since 1902, so a good deal of the sapphire in older costume jewellery is synthetic. The correspondence tables predate both and say nothing whatsoever about origin. If the symbol is the point, it works. If provenance is the point, ask for a report.
