What the sowing trials found

Controlled sowing trials comparing lunar dates against arbitrary ones have been run since the middle of the twentieth century, and the effects they report are either absent or too small to separate from the differences caused by soil, seed lot and weather inside the same experiment. That is the state of the evidence, and this site says so on every page of the section rather than in a footnote. It does not make the calendar useless - a gardener who sows because the table said today still sows, and sowing on a decided date beats sowing whenever there happens to be time - but it does mean the table is a scheduling device with a long history rather than an agronomic input. Read that way, a month offering seven aboveground dates and grading only five as barren is simply a month with a generous choice, and January is the most generous of the twelve.
