A lopsided month and what it shows
Nothing in the soil distinguishes either of those dates from the day before it, and a gardener who needs to sow a root crop on that earlier day sows it and gets a crop. The scheme survives that because it was never a constraint in the first place: an almanac reader chose among the days already free, and the Moon column decided between them. Reading it the other way round, as a permission slip, is a modern habit, and it produces exactly the deadlock a month like this one would create. What the seven aboveground dates do line up with is the real work of a cold February, which is raising seedlings under cover, and that is coincidence rather than design.
