Workable soil, and the test that predates the thermometer
The old test is to squeeze a handful of soil and drop it. If it holds together in a lump, the ground is too wet to be dug, and digging it then wrecks the structure for a season. That test appears in the same almanacs that carried the Moon tables, often on the facing page, and it is the one of the two that has held up. Sowing into cold wet ground is how seed rots rather than germinates, and no phase alters the outcome. Once the gate is open the lunar column has something to do, and March leaves fourteen dates graded neither fertile nor barren for it to work on.
