The number this calendar cannot supply
Last-frost dates are published as probabilities rather than promises, and a gardener working from them puts tender crops out once the risk has fallen to a level worth taking. Between the south coast of England and the north of Scotland that date shifts by more than a month, and the same is true across any large temperate country. A lunar calendar is identical everywhere, which is precisely why it cannot be the thing that decides. Used after the frost date it earns a role: it turns a fortnight of possible days into a short list, and this April the short list is nine dates long.
