• Above-ground crops (greens, tomatoes, cucumbers): 6, 7, 14, 15, 16
• Root crops (carrots, beets, potatoes) and pruning: 2, 3, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30

What the waning half is for once sowing is over

A June garden is mostly maintenance, and the almanac tradition had a job for each waning date rather than leaving it blank. Weeds cut on a waning Moon were held to regrow more slowly, which is the same reasoning applied to hair in the calendar next door and it rests on the same absence of evidence. The habit survives because it schedules a task people put off, and a scheduled weeding beats an unscheduled one by a margin no phase has to explain. June is also the tightest month of the twelve for uncommitted days: only nine of its dates are graded neither fertile nor barren, against fourteen in December. Whatever the tradition is worth, it has more to say about June than about almost any other month here.
