Where the calendar ends, and what it is for
Twelve months of tables are enough to see the shape of the thing. The aboveground count runs from two in high summer to seven in midwinter, driven entirely by which fertile signs happen to sit on the waxing side and not at all by anything a plant experiences. Held against a real growing season the two curves point in opposite directions, and July is where that is most obvious. It is said plainly here rather than smoothed over, because a calendar pretending to be agronomy is worse than one admitting to be a tradition with a long record and a pleasant rhythm. July's seven belowground dates do land on the month's real northern work, which is lifting garlic and onions, and that coincidence is a fair one to enjoy.
