Why a short month loses a sign

The figure of 2.28 days is not a textbook constant but a count taken from the ephemeris behind this table. Over the two years it covers, the Moon enters a new sign 320 times in 730 days. Divide a thirty-one-day month by that and the answer is 13.6, so long months show thirteen or fourteen crossings depending on where the boundaries fall; February gets 12.3. The fractional part is the important half of the number, because it is what keeps the pattern drifting instead of repeating, so no two months of this calendar carry the same list. On top of the arithmetic sits the second rule, and the full moon of the 20th lands in Virgo. A run that would have read 19th to 22nd is published as the 19th, then the 21st and 22nd.
